Original Fiction   Glossary of Abbreviations and Terminology

Enterprise Fan Fiction   The fan fiction community uses a huge amount of abbreviations and fandom-specific jargon. If you're new to the fan fiction community then it can all be a bit bewildering at first. This page is intended as a guide for those new to either writing or reading fan fiction.

Guide to Fan Fiction

Canon

The official version of events and characterisation. This term also encompasses the various pieces of information that are learnt about a character during a series eg that they are right handed, have a sister etc.
      Crack Fic

A story in which one or all of the characters appear in an unusual or weird setting or situation. Sometimes written "crack!fic". Related are "Crack pairing" stories which feature an un-thinkable relationship.

Fanon A fact or event created by fans that has assumed the status of a canon event.
Fem-slash Also spelt "femme-slash". A genre of fan fiction that centres on a romantic, usually non-canon, homosexual relationship between two female characters. See also "slash".
Gen General - a genre of fan fiction which has no or very little romantic content.
      H/C

Harm/Care - a genre of fan fiction in which a character is injured and then recovers, usually helped or cared for by other characters and often leading to romantic involvement. Some fandoms have their own terminology for this genre for example "Whump" or "Owies".

      Het

A genre of fan fiction which centres on a heterosexual romantic relationship.

      Mary Sue

An original character based upon the author or an imagined perfect version of the author. The character may even have the same name as the author. A true Mary Sue will be beautiful, angsty, intelligent, capable of turning her hand to anything and the love interest of her chosen male canon character.

      OC

Original Character - a new character created by the author that does not appear in canon.

      OFC

Original Female Character - as above but specified to be female.

      OOC

      PWP

Plot? What plot? (or Porn Without Plot) - A NC-17 story that is solely about a graphic description of a sexual encounter between two characters. Sometimes there may be a brief story that leads up to the sex scene, but this is secondary to the main purpose of the story.

'Ship Short for "relationship". Those that support one particular pairing within a fandom are refered to as "shippers".

    Slash

A genre of fan fiction that centres on a romantic, usually non-canon, homosexual relationship between two male characters. The name comes from the way the two character names are written eg "Tucker/Reed". Some fandoms indicate slash by amalgamating two names into one eg in Stargate: Atlantis fandom Sheppard/McKay is termed McShep.

      Tag

An addition to an existing canon episode. This may be an addition at the end or include scenes from the episode.
